Sparkman & Stephens Condor 37

Betadur is a beautifully presented Sparkman & Stephens Condor 37 with the lines of a classic and the equipment for enjoyable cruising. Built in 1979 by Midocean Marine in Penryn, she has undergone an extensive refit. Her hull was professionally painted with DD paint, the teak on the bridge deck and superstructure was renewed, and a Volvo Penta D2-40 was fitted in place of the original engine. Below deck, varnished teak joinery and renewed cushions give the interior a warm, welcoming feel.

At 11.70 m long, with a beam of 3.54 m and draught of 2.05 m, Betadur has a GRP round-bilge hull, fin keel and wheel steering. Displacement is approximately 7,200 kg, including 3,500 kg of ballast. She offers five berths, one cabin and 1.92 m of headroom in the saloon. Berth lengths are 2.20 m forward, 2.25 m and 1.75 m on the saloon settees, and 1.98 m aft.

The 40 hp Volvo Penta D2-40 dates from 2006 and drives a three-blade folding propeller through a saildrive. The saildrive diaphragm was replaced in 2015. Fuel is carried in a 180-litre stainless steel tank; stated consumption is approximately two litres per hour. The hour-counter display is defective, with approximately 1,300 engine hours recorded.

Her masthead rig has double spreaders and an air draught of approximately 16 m. The sail inventory includes a 2013 Hagoort 3CL laminate mainsail, a 2013 Hagoort CDX laminate genoa II, a storm jib for the removable inner forestay, and a Parker & Kay gennaker. Further equipment includes Dyneema halyards, a Harken furling system, carbon spinnaker pole, sprayhood, a custom cockpit boom tent and six winches: two Barlow self-tailing, two Harken 46ST and two Barlow 22.

Navigation equipment comprises Nexus NX2 wind, depth and log instruments with cockpit and interior displays, a Nexus NX2 gyrocompass, Lowrance GlobalMap 3500 GPS, Icom fixed and handheld VHF radios, a True Heading RX Carbon AIS receiver and a below-deck Comnav hydraulic autopilot. Electrical equipment includes shore power with an earth-leakage switch, a Mastervolt IVO Smart 12/40 charger, a Victron 12/350 inverter. 

For life aboard, Betadur has a 160-litre stainless steel water tank, pressurised water, a 30-litre Isotemp water heater, an Isotherm refrigerator, a Flavel two-burner gas cooker with oven, a marine toilet and Wallas diesel warm-air heating. Deck equipment includes CQR and Danforth anchors, a removable bathing ladder, liferaft and manual bilge pump.
